Don’t judge me – Tales of the unexpected

As we all know, being a parent is an all-consuming, life changing job. It gives us purpose, a reason for being… and headaches. Your life as you knew it is turned upside down and suddenly you are a different person who is wondering what on earth happened.

Something else occurs when you become a parent too, society suddenly decides that there are certain stereotypes that you should follow. There are thousands of them and they are shoved down our throats by advertisers, magazines, TV programmes, other parents and grandparents, and by everyone else around us. Advice on what to wear, the hairstyles you are allowed, what to eat, what to feed your children, how to lose weight, what activities are acceptable as a family and suggestions on EVERYTHING you ever do is hurled at you from every direction.

We all have preconceived ideas of what parenting should be and could be, and to a point this is helpful because our own thoughts and beliefs give us some guidance on how we parent individually. But our ideals can also pile a lot of pressure on us. How many times have you thought “I should have done this or that” today? How many times have you regretted your choice of words or tone of voice with your children today? This is where mum guilt creeps in.

Our pre conceived ideas, combined with all of the above also lead parents, ourselves included, to sometimes be judgemental of others. Like we’ve actually got our own shit together and can now start advising others on how to parent and live their lives. If you have read any of our blog posts you will know that this is absolutely NOT the case, the only shit we’ve ‘dealt with’ is within a potty training/ nappy changing context and occasionally in a medical emergency!

So this is where we need your help. We would LOVE to write a little series to challenge people’s preconceived ideas of parenthood, whatever the age of your children, whatever your situation. If you feel like you have something you want to say to society, we want to hear from you.

Do you have an usual job or hobby? Have you overcome huge obstacles in your life which have shaped who you are today? Maybe you are a parent by day and a superhero by night.

If you have a cause you would like to raise awareness of or a small business you would like to spread the word about. We want to hear from YOU!

Here’s our plan – It’s a three pronged arrangement:

A photoshoot with our fabulous photographer Julie Elmes. She is responsible for many of the images we use in our blog posts, including these.

An interview with you about your life and experiences of parenthood.

A short Vlog interview to go on our blog and Youtube channel.

What’s in it for you?

A disc of digital images from your photo shoot, a free plug for your cause or business, minor celebrity status from appearing on the blog and YouTube, lots of fun and a cup of tea with us!

We are looking for 5 or 6 people for our first series. If you would like to be involved please contact us!

You must be able to travel to sunny Kent. (If you live far away Kent is great for a little holiday!) We can travel a bit too, but unfortunately we can’t leave the country!

Please share far and wide, we know that there are so many inspiring and phenomenal parents out there. Us parents are pretty awesome!

We can’t wait to hear from you.
